View Full Version : I can see your house from here...
Not your house, obviously. But thought I'd do a pic thread to see what it's like where you live.
I live in Scotland by the River Clyde, so all I will post pics of the river...:D...inspired because today the river happens to be spectacularly beautiful, like silk, reflecting everything and mirror calm...I love it like that.
So here it is, some are the view from my window, all are within a mile or so of my house:

For those who don't know...what happened there to make it famous?
The banks of the Boyne are the site of the earliest known human settlements in Ireland dating from around 8,000 BCE. Also they have the oldest man made structures in Europe and some of the oldest in the world in the form of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth. These are passage tombs dating from approximitly 7000 BCE. The River was also the site of the 1690CE Battle of the Boyne which decided the English Throne between King James and William of Orange(later king william). The River runs through the town of Trim(Baile Athá Triom) which is the site of one of the best preserved Norman castles in Western Europe dating from the 1200s CE. Also in the Boryne valley are Tara and many Ráths and Tuaths dating from the Iron age.

My little village belongs to Deinze, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deinze) which is situated 10 miles from Ghent. Google Earth might be useful for you ;)
Here a big picture of Deinze.

fyi, kansas was named after the Kanza indians. Their name means people of the south wind.
Here's the kansas city skyline from atop a brewery roof, LOL... it's kinda drab right now til everything greens up. Lest you think we are a little backwater, it's a metro area of almost 2 million people. far too many people for my liking. I live about an hours drive from where this photo was taken. I'm out in the country.

That's because they aren't. There aren't a whole lot of beautiful American cities. Some areas of some of the older cities, yes, but there's nothing pretty about a metropolitan area. If you want pretty, though, just step over to the land of my ancestors in Kongeriget Danmark:

Yup. I used to climb around on the rocks a lot when I was little when we went on our annual trip (my dad is a Civil War buff). It's also interesting to see the difference in the 20th Maine monument on Little Round Top from before the movie Gettysburg and after the movie became a hit. Before: tiny, hard to see trail with an overgrown monument and marker. After: a well graveled path, brush nicely cleared, monument polished, always a dozen or so people around it...
It's amazing what a movie can do for a place's popularity. But I do think that Lawrence Chamberlain and the 20th ME deserve a good memorial, so I ain't complaining.
Finney, you are so bad dude!
Phaedra, the west has much beauty that's for sure. Now if we could keep the yuppies out.... sigh....
well folks, I'm outa here. I'll get some phone cam pix of Missouri from horseback.
That's because they aren't. There aren't a whole lot of beautiful American cities. Some areas of some of the older cities, yes, but there's nothing pretty about a metropolitan area. If you want pretty, though, just step over to the land of my ancestors in Kongeriget Danmark:

If I were to move to a foreign country, Denmark would be it.
These are beautiful Phae. But I disagree that American cities have nothing to recommend them, I find them aesthetically pleasing in many ways and throughout Europe the buildings can be pretty similar and a little depressing tbh...

What does the Falkirk wheel actually do?
It's a rotating boat lift - so far, it's the only one. It transfers canal boats between the Forth & Clyde and Union canals, The difference in the levels of the two canals at the wheel is 24 metres (79 feet), roughly equivalent to the height of an eight storey building.

You all are so evil!!!!!!!!!!! As I sit here in Kansas still in it's winter drab. But spring is coming, the tulips are coming up, grass is greening, trees have buds on them....
Here's pictures from my gray weekend in Missouri, our neighboring state:p
Zab - an Arabian, one of my horses.
http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/3653/statefairexpress7st6.jpg
Wish, my friend's horse, and Zab tied to my "white trash" trailer. lest any of you think that one must be bourgouis to have horses.... this trailer is from 1978, it's a rust bucket, but still safe, and I tow it with a truck that has 140,000 miles on it. What's fun in my sport is we can compete with people who drive brand new trucks and pull "rigs" worth $60,000 or more. Money does not make you a better rider and doesn't necessarily buy you a better horse! And all of us come back to camp, muddy, dirty, tired and pretty much equals regardless of our class or station in life.
http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/7369/statefairexpress1nu6.jpg
Zab cam on trail with my friend ahead of us. This was the easiest and MOST BORING trail I've ever ridden on. It's made out of an abandoned railroad line. It's great for hikers and bikers, but boring for equestrians. I'm used to hills, rocks, trees, obstacles, not just 25 miles of straight road!

Greece I have visited, it was the hottest place I ever survived but very beautiful.
The history was fascinating. I was in Corfu and took a few trips, one to Actium Bay. Greektzon can correct if my memory is inaccurate, but the story was that Anthony and Cleopatra engaged in their final sea battle there and Octavion built the city at Actium Bay as a memorial to his great victory. But no one would live there, because it is in the centre of a disease-breeding swamp, so it fell to ruin and when I visited it was being excavated from the undergrowth, they had a half-restored amphitheatre and an entire city still waiting to be unveiled.
Fascinating...also visited an "Oracle", where in ancient times people went to get advice from "the other side" ...they showed us footprints in the secret tunnels between the walls of the Oracle's rooms, where an ancient dog was put to barking and pretending to be Cerberus the hound dog which guards hell. They reckoned the people who went to the Oracle for advice took great risk in doing so and often died. They thought this was because in order for people to have that journey and believe they had travelled to the underworld to speak with the dead, the journey they took was really drug-induced and the things they saw were enhanced by that.
Really interesting...
I'm so jealous. I'm Greek and have never been to Greece! Im the only one in the family who has not!

It's just that, a tower. It was there before the abbey was built.
St. Rule (AKA St. Regulus) is the person generally credited with bringing the bones of St. Andrew to Scotland.

Vaguely recall being told that, in primary school.
I live opposite the Holy Loch. Saint Andrew's remains are supposed to be under water at the mouth of the loch, they were lost there when the ship transporting them sank.
