Would you, or wouldn't you?

The government plans to introduce a scheme where people will be considered to agree to organ donation unless they specifically opt out.

Is that acceptable?

What dictates your view on this?

Why wouldn't you?

I agree with this. I would want to give others new life with my organs. :)

Many reasons not to.

Some religions prohibit it.

Some people feel it is an infringement of their rights.

Some have a fear that their organs will be removed before they are dead.

There is a market for organs...

Some fear they will be removed and not used to help others as was found in the hospital scandal a couple of years back where body parts were sitting around in jars and had been removed... without permission from the bereaved family.

You may simply not wish to have a loved one carved up into pieces after death. The shock of an unexpected death is very traumatic for the family, they may not wish to go through this further trauma or feel it is not right or invasive to destroy the loved one's body like that.

And many just don't like the thought of it...

None of those are good enough excuses in my opinion.

You have no use for your organs once you're dead, so why hang on to them?

What religions prohibit organ donation?

Enver I actually agree with you for once. Cherish this moment :p

Probably Jehovah Witnesses.

It's a rare occurrence indeed.

Why, they are dead? The rule they have is that they cannot take blood transfusions which is an intense overinterpretation of Acts 15 which is in relation to eating blood.

Ahhh...the boys are playing together...:)

I was enjoying this rare moment of peace, I mean that's something you don't see every day, you two in agreement.

But the "eating blood" thing killed the moment. What does that refer to, Gareth?

In the Bible there it is forbidden in the Old and New Testaments not to eat blood. Many Christians as a result do not eat black pudding. However, Jehovahs Witnesses take this one step further, and say do not take ANY blood through at all. However this is only when they are alive.

There is no need for blood transfusion when the person is dead.

I don't think an organ donation system should be either opt-in or opt-out. You should be required, the first time you get a Federal or State ID of some sort (like a drivers license), to choose if you want your organs to be donated or not. And if you change your mind and you feel strongly enough about your new position, you can go down to the local courthouse and fill out a form or somesuch to change it.

I'm all for dorgan donation myself, but I think it has to be down to choice and personal choice at that. Forcing a family into donating a loved ones organs is tyrannical.

I agree with an opt out program. It doesn't infringe on anybody's rights, since you can just say that you don't want to do it. I also think that anyone who opts out should be on the bottom of the recipient list in the case of their needing a new organ.

I'm a donor, on my license. I can't currently give blood.

I would go with the opt out and Phaedrus' idea to work it into the driving licence or some other part of the system, but people should have the option not to do it.

But then what about those cases when a child is involved? Children need organs, the demand is there as much as for adults, so should all children be presumed part of this? Is there an age restriction, or how could there be if the organs are needed. And how do they opt out?

It would be horrific to try to make a family part with say a child's organs after an accident. I think I could not do it, but then after it might be a regret for the family that they did not.

Yes, people die from waiting for organs. I don't presume that one life should be more important than another.
