A Chara,

Ireland is moving towards unity and independence. Therefore it is both necessary and prudent for the Irish people to engage on the shape, form and nature that a re-united Ireland will take.

More than eighty years has passed since the First Dáil was established in Dublin but in all of this time no Irish government has ever produced a Green Paper on Irish unity. No Irish Government has ever set out a strategy, produced an outline of a legislative programme or an economic analysis, or set out the actions that would need to be taken to give effect to Irish unity.

Sinn Féin believes that there is a responsibility on the Irish government to bring forward a strategy to achieve national self-determination, Irish re-unification, political independence, sovereignty and national reconciliation.

In this discussion document we are calling on the Irish Government to prepare and publish a Green paper on Irish unity and to begin the practical planning for Irish unity now. We are also calling for widespread consultation at home and abroad. I hope that Unionists will be prepared to take part in such a process and put forward their vision for the future and to consider, discuss and engage with nationalists and republicans about the nature and form a new united Ireland will take.

What Sinn Féin is about is setting out our roadmap to Irish unity and we believe that others should do the same. The primary objective at this time has to be to sustain the peace process and to build the political process and the Good Friday Agreement. Sinn Féin is wedded to this. But we continue to work for an end of the union and for Irish re-unification.

Sinn Féin is launching a campaign to get the Irish government to initiate this process and bring forward a Green Paper on Irish unity. We will be taking this campaign to every county in Ireland and will also seek international support.

Ireland is moving to unity and independence, Scotland too... do you think Wales will be helped from this rupture of the UK?

The Welsh are a very strange in that they tend t be fiercly nationalist in preserving their culture and language. However they also tend to see themselves as very British and are more than happy within the Union IMO.

Any Green Paper is redundant under the GFA/SAA.

Initiated by those who proscribe to these treaties that is.

I disagree.

In fact, the entire concept of the Irish nation is being steadily eroded.

The Irish nation is very much in place. However the Irish state is moving closer to unity

How exactly?

Our right to self-determination is still being usurped by the British government.

There are two British states occupying the Irish nation.

Ireland is further from Unity now that it was a decade ago. Rarely do we even hear such calls from the establishment politicians any more (including Adams and the PSF leadership) and as Bertie Ahern said "the constitutional question is settled".
