CANBERRA: Scientists have warned that the world might once again be heading towards an Ice Age, with global warming approaching a possible end.
Evidence in support of this theory has come from pictures obtained from the US Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, which showed no spots on the sun, thus determining that sunspot activity has not resumed after hitting an 11-year low in March last year.

A sunspot is a region on the sun that is cooler than the rest and appears dark.
Some scientists believe a strong solar magnetic field, when there is plenty of sunspot activity, protects the earth from cosmic rays, cutting cloud formation, but that when the field is weak - during low sunspot activity - the rays can penetrate into the lower atmosphere and cloud cover increases, cooling the surface.
According to Australian astronaut and geophysicist Phil Chapman, this might have caused the world to cool quickly between January last year and January this year, by about 0.7C.

"This is the fastest temperature change in the instrumental record, and it puts us back to where we were in 1930," said Dr Chapman.
"If the temperature does not soon recover, we will have to conclude that global warming is over," he added.
Dr Chapman has proposed preventive, or delaying, moves to slow the cooling, such as bulldozing Siberian and Canadian snow to make it dirty and less reflective.
"My guess is that the odds are now at least 50:50 that we will see significant cooling rather than warming in coming decades," he said .

So really...still nobody knows what's happening or what's going to happen.
Because nobody can predict with accuracy, we can only deal with the immediates in this.

Can I change my answer in the nuclear power thread to, "Its getting chilly. Let's burn more coal instead"?
:D

global warming means beach front property for me. ice age means a couple more months of winter a year. either way i think well adapt.

You'd only have to change it back tomorrow...;)

I think the idea of the next Ice Age coming started in the '70s. Then it fell out of fashion, and now global warming is the new "in" thing.

There's a neat book, by Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, and Michael Flynn, called Fallen Angels, in which the Greens take over worldwide governments and stop almost all pollution, but it turns out that the greenhouse effect was the only thing holding back the next ice age. Very amusing book.

I'll be quite honest, this finding was quite a shock to me. I'm still not sure whether I believe it or not. If the finding is the same next year, THEN I'll truly believe it. --although it really is strange though to have snow in mid April here in Tacoma WA USA--I've lived here just about my whole life, I'm 35, and I can't ever remember there being SNOW and lots of hail this late, and I think I only remember a couple times having it in March. It usually hits between December and mid February, and in general, it's a very negligible amount of snow that only happens a couple days (unless one is living at high altitudes).

I guess his findings have angered a lot of people. It doesn't really anger me, it makes me feel relieved to some degree unless this is a trend that becomes extreme, but that isn't very likely.

The way i see it is this - everyone is running around screaming about imminent disaster and how it is all our fault. How do they know that this isnt the usual course the planet would have taken. We go through heating and cooling phases.

Im not saying that humans havent fecked over the planet - becasue we have, im just not sure its via CO2.
Its becoming like heresy to suggest otherwise - which in itself is creepy, its a theory not a fact. It you cant challenge them then whats the point?

Plus the minute the governemnt started taxing the people becasue of this - somethings not right

I just hitnk we need a lot more evidence and a lot less hysterical ramblings
