View Full Version : Important: Changes in the forum

Ok lets discuss any changes we should make to the forum. I closed the other thread as it was way off topic and not constructive. Lets keep this debate general and not get into talk about anything else other than things people would like to see changed.
Again some of the things we might dscuss are the rules, moderator guidelines, sections of the forum and general look of the forum. All criticism is welcome.

quirk- You said on the other thread that you think some changes could be beneficial. Could you introduce one you have in mind for discussion?

First off I would like to get the rules and mod guidelines clear and precise. The forum will be getting upgraded to a new version in the coming days as it is but I am not sure yet whether to make other changes. At the moment the is also some forums in which there is little or no debate such as economics, science and Africa. Africa will have to stay but I am open to suggestions on the others and if we need them or not.
Also does anyone thing new sections might be beneficial? I have seen sections on other forums for things such as showbiz, conspiracy theories and 1V1 debate and I am just wondering what people think. I would like to have as much input from as many people as possible into how we move forward so as the forum becomes more reflective of those who post here and not just what the mods think.

Personally I feel that you are on the wrong track when you pursue getting the moderator rules and guidelines clear and precise. I have been playing on forums such as this since about early 99 and have yet to see a situation where the moderators didn't show a bias. They were either for or against and if they were against a person's POV they didn't remain quiet. If they were for a person's POV they remained quiet even when the most egregious violations of the rules happened. In my experience it has always been more desirable to choose moderators right from the beginning who had an ability to handle themselves in a proper and orderly manner. What I'm saying quirk, is that a moderator who chooses to step out of line will do so regardless of the rules which are designed to prevent him/her from doing so. To say anything more on the issue would be to me interfering in an internal and private manner which needs to be worked out by you in private.
A different version of PHP would definitley be a step forward in my opinion. I find this one we are using to be not as good as some of the others. I'm sorry but I don't know the number of the better versions of PHP. One feature I do feel is needed is a clear way to recognize when you have posted on a thread. Happy faces and other such symbols I find less desirable. Most I have not even taken the time to learn what they mean. For instance, does the thumbs up or thumbs down symbol mean anything important to anyone but the person who posted it?
I would be against 1v1 debate because by it's very description it is going to limit participation in the forum. I don't have any preferences for new sections at the moment.
Thanks for the opportunity to share in the new forum setup.

We need coherent guidelines, and to stick to them instead of saying that moderators are wrong to infract for something that is in clear violation of the rules / guidelines. I think more independence is needed for the moderator so that we do not have to ask for every decision we make regarding decisions, or maybe even assigning some moderators to different forums, and leave their control over that particular forum. I've seen other forums that do this, in particular boards.ie, where it is possible to ban someone from a particular board instead of from the whole site as a means of deterring people from violating the rules.
Also I reckon that some sections need to have separate guidelines to others, boards.ie which lays ground rules in each forum is key for that:
Let me show you the Charter of the Christianity Forum there.
http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=93461
or from the LGBT forum:

I like this idea!!. Mods might have a special interest in certain areas (sections)....... and might be more knowledgeable in them , therefore making them a more effective mod too.

Glad you like, I think it might be the way forward here, but until there is a certain level of activity moderators would have to moderate a span of forums, I would probably suggest 2 moderators on each forum as one can consult the other about violations of the rules etc. I also think that some forums (the more active ones) will require more attention than others. Guidelines on how to deal with certain forums could be made as a sticky inside each relevant section.

I noticed this in the christian forum charter: 3.Arguments such as "There is no God, therefore..." or "The Bible is full of contradictions, therefore..." will not be tolerated. Don't start off with a conclusion which your audience is bound to disagree with!
It is mentioned that the forum is for christians and non-christians alike so it's clear it's not just for believers. Therefore I'm wondering if it's not o.k. to come right out and say there is no god, is it right to say there is a god? I'm wondering if it's o.k. to say that the bible is the word of god and is therefore infallible, would it not be o.k. to say that the bible is full of contradictions.
And so I'm wondering if that kind of bias and restrictions on people voicing their POV freely is what this forum would want. It appears that in that instance on the christian forum that it's fine with גארט to have that sort of restrictions on free speech.
So my position on that may surprise some now. If the forum wants to restrict free speech in this manner and adopt this rule or at least the intent of this rule, then I will have no objection.
I could obviously never live with such censorship but that would settle the matter once and for all very quickly. I would be handed enough infractions and points within the first day or two that I would earn banning from the forum. And the problem would be resolved.

At this point Shadow I can't bring myself to argue anymore on what happens on this forum. I just see the problem with the idea as specific and I see a dishonourable intention in it. If a person who is religious can become the moderator for the religion section then he can impose his agenda upon all those who post on that section. You will read what I have discerned is the intent on my previous post. Frankly Shadow, if they can get quirk to agree they can do what they wish.

Personally I think the best thing about this forum is free speech and my own view is that people should be able to say what they like short of incitement. My own experience of boards.ie has been negative and their moderating and censorship is away over board - I stopped posting after a day or two because of this.
Any rules in my view should not be about restricting what someone says but rather just a mechanism to prevent threads deteriorating into arguments.
On moderating maybe it is best to just leave it as it is at the moment but I would like it to be a collective decision on what we do as much as possible.

There are a lot of unbelievers that post there, and they post good stuff, they post good arguments and then the Christians would discuss it. Take a look through some of the recent threads. I can tell you now I easily prefer discussing my religion there than here.

If you are now choosing to address me again then do it on the appropriate thread on religion, not here. Just be warned that I will show no respect for relgion which obviously deserves no respect. Neither will I show any respect for anyone who furthers fantasies and attempts to say those fantasies are realities. When you quoted the charter of the christian forum you made it clear what you expected here and it's just not going to happen. I would suggest that you now leave your baggage behind, join in, and help to bring this forum back from near extinction.

Agree!! I recently left a forum that did what you describe. Seemed that every Monday , one would find a group of posters MIA because of some minor irritant that the mods used to ban them. What is curious is that it was a US based forum where they brag about "freedom of speech" etc. Yet in reality , one has to really watch what one says.
Amazing what folks will give up for their Gov't and fear of their "homeland security dept. but that is another story /topic.:(;)
There ARE things that posters and mods should be cognizent of : Name calling, branding, making personal antagonistic statements etc , as that just destroys the topic . and is NOT what a forum is about. folks will not all agree on everything........ and that would negate the purpose of a forum. If one disagrees, just say so and even say why. and let it go. Everyone has a vested interest in THEIR opinion , but that does not mean their opinion is always the "right" one or the only one out there.

Shadow- I would just assume that when a forum declines to a half dozen posts a day that the people who must pay money to keep it running are going to eventually just say to hell with it. I don't know for a fact how much traffic a forum has to have to keep it viable but today left me with an impression that what traffic this one did have was not adequate. I can say for myself that if there is nothing more interesting on this forum than continually being harassed by a coupe of fu--ing teenagers who are trying to be moderators then eventually I'm going to give up. And if we take away the contribution you and I are making on this forum then what is left?
Or to put it very bluntly and rudely, I think it's time for quirk to do some asskicking and I'm at the point of being willing to stand in line and have my ass kicked if that's what it's going to take. If you were asked, would you be a moderator?
I'll be taking a few days off again in order to see if any of this can be straightened out. Smell ya all next Monday or perhaps briefly tomorrow if I have time before I leave town on a business trip.

It is quiet everywhere at this time of year US. Things will pick up after holiday time is over.
Quirkie, here's some links maybe help with your colour scheme. You may already have similar, but here you go in case the posters want to have a crack at making up a colour scheme:
http://websitetips.com/colortools/sitepro/
http://websitetips.com/colorcharts/
and this site is good for basic instructions...even I am able to follow it:
http://www.htmlgoodies.com/tutorials/getting_started/
For what it's worth, I like the colour scheme here although it is a little dull. Always thought changing the green for maybe a touch of red...but having tried to update the colours on my own site, it's clear you can't know what will work until you see it there. You'd have to muck about and try different schemes out, I think.
But please don't go dark...I hate dark sites.

The question to you UShadItComing would you stand in as moderator if asked?
Sorry, I missed this message yesterday. No, I wouldn't become a moderator on this forum. It seems to me that this forum lacks ordinary members more than it lacks moderators. And right now I'm really not convinced that this forum is going to survive much longer, what with the lack of posts and especially posts with a worthwhile content. I think this is at least in part due to a couple of moderators who are not giving much of a contribution and also hte fact that they want to be rude and abusive to others who don't share their opinions. Had Shadow been a moderator right from the beginning perhaps this forum would be doing a little better. Watch those two closely and pounce on them if they do anything more to discourage good people from taking part.
Also do you have any forum buddies so to speak that you could invite over here to help build our fourm. I know that you had quite a few allies on PF before you were banned, and even you must admit the presence of moderation and censorship on this forum is of a much lower level than the one you experianced over there.
What is PF forum? I don't recall being banned from any forums lately but I do recall quitting a couple because it was evident that the admins would not keep some biased moderators under control. At least here we have quirk who is willing to give everyone a chance to voice an opinion without having to face warning and points from petulant kid mods. When you let me know what PF stands for I'll see what I can do.
If you've been active on many forums you will know that things have changed a lot. Where there used to be just a few forums, there are now many good ones and they're all competing with each other. A forum needs to be good to survive. When there are as little as 6 posts in the political section then the forum holds little interest for me or for others who are interested in an exchange of ideas.

Ya think cx! I have a whole list of failed attempts to have me censored and eventually banned from the forum, courtesy of an overactive mod with too much estrogen coursing through it's veins. Not to mention a bunch of infractions that were reversed because they were total bullshit.
I'm just saying that if we aren't successful in getting more participation on this forum soon then you mods will be left with talking to and congratulating yourselves on how well this is going. Why do you want to keep fighting me, why not try aiding me and contributing a little more yourself? Open a can of soup for the kid, tell your partner to get off her/his ass, and get busy!

I like the green and blue, but the white background is boring. A pale blue background like another forum I post on is boring, too. I guess I'm in the minority since I like dark skins and have my mozilla firefox set to a burgundy and gold skin. I tried a bunch out and that's my favorite so far. I don't like black backgrounds, though - too dark.

Believe it viv. Any forum is honoured to have my presence. I don't really care if he's gay or not but I'm wondering why he is so preoccupied with gays, supports gay priests, and writes so much about gays and defending gayness. Also apparently takes part on a gay/lesbian forum I'm told. So far he hasn't denied that he is gay and until he does then I will just assume that he is. Not a big deal so let's not worry about it.
I have respect for gays viv but I don't have a lot of respect for pretenders and closet gays.

With all due respect......... sexual preferences / or biological tendancies are a personal matter and not part of the topic. Now, if some want to make it a topic and discuss how sexual preferences are handled in today's society , might not be a bad idea. Sexuality is in the biological wiring. It is not a frivilous "choice" that folks make. Just as skin pigmentation is explained scientifically and related to the geographical regions where folks ancestors come from. Folks don'nt make a choice or HAVE a choice about their pigmentation. The choice is relavent only in how these people choose to handle their sexuality and their pigmentation. The caucasion folks do not have superiority over any other group.
( as reference: check out the program on Knowledge net. about SKIN. ........ as it is highly infomative and prejudice busting. )
This is what makes pigmentation or sexual prejudices so silly and biased. But then prejudice as a phenomena makes no rational sense to begin with. Just that some folks have the obsession/compulsion to brand other folks into pigeon holes ............ whether it makes sense or not.

Oh right, and thanks. I think I quit that one because it had stupid moderators who couldn't be kept under control. I'm not sure but that's usually the reason a forum loses the privilege of having me post with it.
Actually, you were banned from that site. Just thought I would refresh your memory.
I don't believe it.
I support gay rights, but I am not gay. Injustice and inequality are why I support them in debate. You say you are not homophobic, but what difference does it make if a person does not choose to reveal his sexuality? There are obvious reasons why that might happen. People can be vile to those who are openly gay.

I was banned from there aswell, seems if you dont agree with the mods politcal stance you get banned pretty fast.
I am not an obama supporter, so I was banned in under 10 posts.

As was I, after 4,500 posts. I think I hold the forum record there as far as posting Obama threads that question his character. PF is definately biased and a moderator named Michael there is the worst. In fact, he is considered a troll by many since he has a tendency to derail threads that he does not agree with. I have not been active in this forum much since joining (thank you Viv for the referrel) and am seeing what type of alignment it has.
Obama madness seems to be sweeping the nation.

I've been banned from PF about 5 times. I moderated there for a long time, then had a difference of opinion with the Admin. Who is now also banned from PF...lol...
But things are settling there now. The current staff are really ok.

They are OK until you cross their path. PF is a pro Democrat/Socialist/Communist forum that will shun any member that has anything negative to say about Obama. My experience with moderators (as you very well know) has been questionable, especially with the influence
Michael has over the group.

No need. My remarks were in 'general" Mainly because I have a real negative towards prejudice of any kind. So many people get hurt, and are not able to live their lives as they would choose. Fear of rejection and branding is enough for folks to keep things "in the closet" ......unless it is a visible characteristic. what is astounding, is that those that do the bias and are prejudiced are no shining example of humanity to begin with....... as prejudice (IMHO) is a serious psychological character flaw.

I honestly can't remember which forum it was but I know that I found them to be very biased and I purposely helped them to find a reason to ban me. I also know that I went back as lieexposer to show them that they couldn't ban me.
But the real point of the discussion is that this forum's admin won't be cowed by a couple of whiners and so the subject is best just left alone for a while. Now it's just too bad this come-lately AD kid needs to have a run at me too. He won't do well, mark my words.

Open a can of soup for the kid, tell your partner to get off her/his ass, and get busy!

well your list only has one infraction that ive given you and it didnt fail. and whos trying to get you banned??? no one even discussed that at any point is it just another attempt by you to play a victim again???

I dont want to keep fighting you, i just dont appreciate people threatening to call social services on me and making a big deal about something as small as grammer. and that is why i dont like you it doesnt mean im trying to fight you, and you with your suttle comments are as much and instigator as anyone else. as for what my gf is doing how do you know shes sitting on her ass??? do you not realize that we are both busy as we are both partners in this relationship???

I make a habit of not going back to a forum I don't like. By the way, looks like lieexposer didn't have a very long posting career there either. Posters come and go. I guess that's the nature of forums. Now if you go back to a forum that banned you you're just looking for trouble. Just my opinion.

little anime boy- when moderators on a forum start to push you because of their bias you just push back because you know that you can only fight fire with fire. There is no sense in playing nice with them once they have made up their minds. The only thing to do is to do what I had to do on this forum with the religious kid mod. (if he had a proper name which could be typed on a regular keyboard I wouldn't have to refer to him as the religious kid mod) And some of his infractions were reversed and it should have ended there but he got a bone in his teeth and he wasn't capable of ending it. Now the same thing is going on with ciaranxavier and he's got in the habit of giving me points. I'm fighting back because there is only one way to deal with that kind of crap and that's to fight back. If it starts to look like he's getting some sympathy from the admins then I just quickly make sure they have a reason to ban me and I leave. Or I write a message to the forum saying that it's not worth my time to be here anymore. But why are you so interested in me little anime boy?

In that case I was looking for trouble and I went back to prove to them that I could. I think it was a forum where they tried to claim that they banned me and I needed to set the record straight and tell everyone that I had quit first.

You need to keep your own problems with others in check, and not let it overflow into uncivil rants. You are not shitting on anyone. You are just projecting the anger and frustration that you have in your life. You are insulent and uncivil, and this forum must have some real moderation bias to accept this sort of posting from you. You have threatened me 2 times within a 3 hour period. I wonder why this is allowed? I guess there are no rules here, and that brings on behavior like the kind you are exibiting.
I am sure that any perspective members that check out this forum would be immediately turned off by your bullying. I'll just wait to see how long it's tolerated by staff.

I didn't call him gay, I asked him if he was gay because he runs around the web bringing up the topic and he frequents a gay, lesbian forum. I'm not homophobic but I feel that some people ask for attention and this appears to be one instance. If he's not gay he can proclaim that he isn't or he can remain in the closet. If he is he can proclaim that too. If he raises the issue again on this forum I will just assume that he is inviting a response.
Would you suggest the issue is handled in a different way? For now I'll let sleeping dogs lie until he introduces the subject again. Simple, and it's too damn bad if the mods don't like it.

Secondly, when I have posted in the LGBT section, it has always been to do with upcoming civil partnership legislation.
