View Full Version : Images that define history

These threads have always proved to be very sucessful on other forums so I just thought I would start one here. Post any image that you feel defines a moment in history. Also if it is not an image or event well known to others could you say a few words about what the image is. Here is one to start us off:

For those that don't already know this is Guernica by Pablo Picasso. Guernica is a town in the Basque region that was bombed by the Luftwaffe during the Spanish Civil War. Though it isn't a photo it is still a very important image or rather statement about War, the 20th century and where humanity is headed. It hangs in the UN HQ in New York. The US demanded that it be covered by a curtain while they were outlining their plan to invade Iraq. Bizarrely the painting was concealed as requested. :(

The photo above is the Pulitzer Prize winning photo taken in 1994 during the Sudan famine. The picture depicts a famine-stricken child crawling towards an United Nations food camp, located a kilometer away.
The vulture is waiting for the child to die so it can eat it. This picture shocked the whole world. No one knows what happened to the child, including the photographer, Kevin Carter, who left the place as soon as the photograph was taken.
Three months later, he committed suicide due to depression.

I'm not 100% sure but the photo appeared around the same time as a BBC Newsnight report on U.S. soldiers in Anbar working with "former" Sunni insurgents. One of the soldiers says something to the effect of 'We know these guys were trying to kill us not to long ago and now we're supposed to trust them'.

Under socialism China was a much better place for the masses of people. There is many statistics including the fact that lif expectancy doubled between the 1949 revolution and death of chairman Mao in 1976.

Following the death of Mao undemocratic and capitalist forces began the task of undoing the good work achieved under Socialism, which has resulted in the capitalist behemoth that is present day China.

This is the most awe-inspiring image I know of. All but six of those points of light and color are galaxies, the six being stars that happened to be in the field. And this is a tiny patch of less than one two-millionth of our sky. There are almost 3000 galaxies in view in this image. Each one has billions of stars.
Really shows how small we really are.

I don't want to start a big debate thing, but I'd like to point out that the Serbs were brutally massacring thousands of Albanians who lived in Serbia by an accident of geography. I consider a bombing run or two to be acceptable in that instance.

I consider a bombing run or two to be acceptable in that instance. Well, that's what you've been told. But Serbia was fighting the terrorist KLA, not Albanian civilians. The total number of Albanian victims is around 3000 and more than 95% of them were terrorists. The number of Serb civilians who were killed in the bombing is about 2000. You want to say that 3000 dead terrorists approves killing of 2000 unarmed civilians? Interesting stance.

And how does one differentiate between a terrorist and a civilian? If a Serbian tank rolls through an Albanian village and an angry civilian throws a brick or a molotov cocktail at the tank, does that make him a terrorist? Interesting stance.

No, it does not. Terrorists were the ones wearing KLA uniforms and symbols, and heavily armed. Their main goal was to provoke Serbian forces to react, which was one hell of a legitimacy for Americans to conduct the bombing campaign without the approval of UN.

This is pretty much the ultimate unconscious 'thinking' thread. That is, it's not about conscious thought at all. For people who possess language, thinking in pictures is relagated to the unconscious. All we aprehend is the emotional reactions that result.
