Why do we still go by the electoral vote? Some people say it's because if it's not broke, don't fix it. Well I'm telling you that it is broken.

Al Gore lost because he didn't get the electoral vote. If we went by the popular vote, he would've won and our country would be in a much better shape.

Thanks to George Bush, we're in a bad recession and in a war as well. We'd be in neither if we didn't have the electoral college.

Barack Obama is now the only hope we have of getting us out of this mess that Bush has gotten us into. That's why I voted for Obama. The electoral college should be dismantled.

I was talking to some US citizens about this and they pointed out that if this was the case some states wouldn't matter. I asked why this was a problem considering it should be a persons vote that matters and not a states and it was pointed out that presidential candidates would just flit from big city to big city and ignore less populated states. Having lived in Ireland and England this isn't an issue for me as we are tiny to the US in comparison but I do find it interesting. Are the issues the people I spoke to concerns for you?

PS: Obama winning on both counts in this election kind of made the point meaningless for the next four years but I think you may have a valid point.

I think they should implement Proportional Representation in the US elections for House and Senate as well. It would allow better representation of minorities, First Past The Post systems like in the UK and the USA tend to have two very big parties and maybe one or two small ones. Infact in the USA there are no non-Republican or Democrat parties in either of those houses of parliament?

You still go by it because it represents all of your people, not just the majority. Your system is set up to ensure the rights of minorities, not to allow mob rule.

Al Gore is exceptional. The system usually pans out as it should. But your economy is not only the fault of Bush, some of the issues which caused it predate him, even as far back as Reaganomics. The fault can't be apportioned only to one person.

Regarding Obama, it was reported the majority of people who voted for him claimed they did so on the basis of the economy. I have asked a few and they don't know what he proposes to do about the economy...
